I had the distinct pleasure of testing a pattern this week; my first I might add, and I was SO very excited about the honor!
If you are interested, you can purchase the re-released pattern at http://blog.chriswdesigns.com/2016/10/emma-pattern-revamped-now-includes-a-flap.html ,and see my creation (I’m Nancy J).
I have to say, for a new pattern; this one was very easy to follow and put together. There are only a few pattern pieces and the instructions are easy to follow. I chose the flap version as I really liked the way it looks.
The strap is a super cute “braided” strap which was not only easy to do, but is a super unique to all other bags I have made or seen! I really liked how easy the pattern came together and the possibilities for different versions are UNLIMITED!
I chose not to do the “frill” version this time around (although I am sure I will try it in the future), for the simple fact that I really like a purse to look closed, so personal preference only.
I finished this bag in about 6 hours, which for my very first time making it seemed very reasonable to me. The part that took the longest was most definitely picking my fabrics! HA! I chose a bird theme in blues with a glitter vinyl gusset and flap. I am very pleased with how it turned out and how versatile this bag can be. You could make this a crossbody, out of cotton, out of leather, out of vinyl, change the flap shape a bit and add some glitsy hardware….like I said the possibilities are UNLIMITED!
Thank you so much to Chris W Designs for creating this bag and for allowing me to be a tester!

So, starting your own business (whether online or a brick and mortar) is definitely harder than I ever imagined. I have a hard time with patience and that seems to be my “undoing” more times than not! HA!
To help get my Etsy store some traffic and hopefully more business; my daughter and I decided to have a party! We love hanging with our friends and what better way to share your creativity than while eating snacks, chatting, giggling and having a good time?!
So July 16, 2016 we are having a “Pretty Purse Party” – we have each invited our local and not so local friends to the house! We will share food, drinks, fun, prizes and a MEGA giveaway!
The picture is only one item that will be present, I’m working on tons more 🙂
Hope it works!
I would like to start this weeks blog stating how very sad I am to hear about the mass shooting in Orlando. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and friends.
This week I tried a new wallet called the NCW or Necessary Clutch Wallet. This pattern was super easy and the end result is a fabulous wallet!
I have had this pattern in my arsenal for several months, but it has intimidated me and I hadn’t tried it. Boy, am I disappointed I haven’t made it previously!
The pattern is easy to follow, easy to sew and easy to understand. The one complaint I might have is how thick all of the layers are; this definitely makes the sewing challenging on certain parts of the sew. But overall, this is an easy sew. One of the greatest things about this pattern is you can add a short handle and make this wallet into a clutch or add a longer strap and it becomes a cross-body “wallet on a string”! Great convertibility and awesome options!
I also went back on the first wallet I made and added chicago screws to the thickest part to give it a little bit more strength.
This was my first time with a twist lock, first time with chicago screws and first time actually selling a wallet! Super fun!
Emmaline bags has a large array of patterns, but I would suggest this wallet for an “advanced newbie”; only because of the thickness.
Thanks Emmaline Bags for such an amazing wallet pattern. You can find Emmaline bags at Emmaline Bag Patterns . They also sell bag parts and pieces to assist in your sewing needs.
I kept the first wallet for myself; but you can buy them very soon on my Etsy web page at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/FunCreationsbyNancy?ref=hdr_shop_menu

First let me say to my U.S. followers: HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY! I thank each and every one of you that served, each family that sacrifices their loved ones and those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom. I salute you all.
I served in the U.S. Navy, my grandfather, my uncle and my baby brother all served. I salute each of them too. I appreciate everything each of you did to maintain our country in wartime and in peace.
Swoon Patterns: http://swoonpatterns.com/ have this wonderful small handbag called Lola and I decided this week that I would give her a try!
For the very first time I attempted vinyl accents, a recessed zipper and bag feet! This bag took me about 9 hours to make (there were a lot of “firsts” for me), but I have to say; I fell in love with my creation!
I didn’t find the vinyl as hard to work with as I had anticipated; that isn’t to say there wasn’t a learning curve though! I was really nervous about using vinyl on a first time try on a new pattern, but she turned out beautifully!
I had to remember to lengthen my stitching on the vinyl, which was different for this newbie; I think I have used the same stitch for almost everything I have ever made; out of fear to try something new. I was also very nervous about “ruining” my machine with this fabric. So I used a leather needle, my walking foot, and lengthened my stitches and it worked beautifully.
I learned a lot with this one and can’t wait to make more, I would love this bag with a shoulder strap; but I’m not sure how to make that work yet….but I will!!!
Stay tuned for my next blog; which will include the Swoon pattern “Mabel” – a retro (from the 50’s) style handbag!!
Until next time; Be Kind To One Another!
I thought I would try my hand at a new pattern this week because I LOVE the purse itself…this is the record of my first attempt at Swoon’s “Ethel” pattern.
The instructions were pretty clear, but even when I felt lost there were tons of You Tube videos to help me work through the parts that my brain wouldn’t accept ;).
This was my very first attempt using fusible foam and making outside slip pockets. I have to say; I really like the “formed” shape of the fusible foam, but I felt like I fought my work through my machine the whole way. It was very frustrating to have my forearms screaming at me while I’m trying to make something beautiful! HAHA!
I did however finish in about 9 1/2 hours time (split up due to my full-time job), but I would DEFINITELY make this purse again. I believe I might try some different stabilizer/interface combos and see if that makes the actual sewing a little easier. I would also like to add a magnetic snap and feet to the creation next time.
This is a perfect sized purse for a shopping day, the farmer’s market, travelling or just about anything else you can think to do with it.
You can find many amazing patterns at: http://swoonpatterns.com/ and just search in You Tube if you get stuck!
As always you can purchase this purse on my Etsy site at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/FunCreationsbyNancy?ref=hdr_shop_menu
Until next time!! Be kind to one another!
I thought today I would try a new pattern. It took me about 6 hours to get it all cut and together.
I found the pattern directions to be good; although if I weren’t looking at the pictures, there were things missing. Stuff like cutting the darts out, matching fabrics to sew together etc.
I think for a prototype this piece (see picture) is okay. There are many mistakes; the biggest was using the wrong size zipper. I found the making to be pretty easy (remember I’ve only been sewing for 5-months), considering the limited and self-taught skill I have.
I know the next piece will be amazing and I can’t wait to get started!
Please let me know what you think of the finished product, feel free to constructively critique my skills and I ALWAYS accept cheerleading! 🙂
Until next time; be kind to one another…YOU will be happier!
Hi Everyone! I am fairly new to Sewing (5 months) and this is definitely my very first blog! I’m so excited to share the little bit of experience I have and to work through some patterns with…
